Capsicum annuum belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The generic name ‘Capsicum’ is derived from the Greek word for ‘biting’, ‘kapto’ because of the spicy flavour of most of its fruits.
Capsicum is mainly known as a tasty fruit in many dishes but breeding companies have also discovered other qualities of this fruit. The result is that increasingly more ‘Capsicums’ are introduced to the market but this time as colourful, fruit bearing ornamental plants. The plants of the “Karneval” series are vigorous with large heavy fruits and a height of approx.. 20-25 cm. “Salsa” is a well branching mini ‘Capsicum’ series, with very compact plants, bearing an abundance of small fruits. “Samba” is the most popular series with compact plants and large fruits (2-3 cm).
