Viola cornuta

The origins of Pansies can be found in ancient Greece, about 400 years before Christ. Pansies were cultivated by the Greeks for homeopathic purposes. Pansies have been amongst the sturdiest bedding plants for many years. They are guaranteed to flowers for long periods and provide lots of colour to the garden during seasons where few other bedding plants are available. This makes Pansies very suitable for parks, landscapes, gardens and flower boxes.

Pansies are particularly cultivated for two flower periods, autumn flowering and spring flowering. Many growers use the cultivation of Pansies as an early cultivation to precede the production of bedding plants. Viola is a major plant family name that includes about 500 species. In general, “wittrockiana” varieties are exclusively used for large flowered pansies and “cornuta” varieties for small flowered violas.
