Carthamus

Download Infosheet

Carthamus tinctorius (Safflower or False Saffron) is an excellent cut flower that over the last few years is often used in mixed bouquets. Because of its short cultivation period it is an ideal cut flower.

Carthamus belongs to the Compositae or Asteraceae family and originates from Asia. Carthamus produces flowers on sturdy, poorly ramified stems. Orange Carthamus is most commonly grown because there is the most demand for this in the trade. Sensitivity to spot in white Carthamus and the lack of demand for a yellow Carthamus means that these colours are not often grown up until now. When yellow Carthamus is supplied to the flower auctions in small quantities, the price-making can be good. Height: 60-80 cm.
