Ranunculus belongs to the Ranunculaceae family (buttercup of crowfoot family). This family consist of 29 genera, including Ranunculus with 400 species. In reality, only hybrids of the Ranunculus asiaticus species are supplied to flower auctions. Clear distinction is made between different varieties and there are various series available on the market.
Ranunculus is a diminutive of the Latin word ‘rana’, which means frog. The name refers to the marshy areas where Ranunculus grows in the wild. “Bloomingdale” is a beautiful series with a complete range of colours. Compared to the “Bloomingdale” series, the “Maché” series is more compact, earlier and more suitable for cultivation in 10.5 cm pots. “Magic” is a genetically compact series that hardly needs any inhibition.
