Ravenala madagascariensis
Ravenala madagascariensis has a unique, symmetrical growth habit with impressively large leaves arranged on long stems like a flat fan. In a later stage, a trunk is formed and the leaves resemble a crest. Ravenala is part of the Strelitzia family, which is reflected in its foliage. This magnificent specimen is native to Madagascar, where it grows in warm, humid forest areas, rainforests, swamps, and along mountain slopes. In warmer, frost-free climates, this container plant is highly suitable for use in parks and gardens. Ravenala is said to owe its common name, Traveler's Tree, to the source of fresh drinking water it would provide for travelers, as water collects in the leaf sheath bases. Other internationally used names for Ravenala madagascariensis include: Traveller's tree or Traveller's palm. Evanthia has Ravenala seeds, with their distinctive blue color, available year-round for commercial production. Evanthia can also produce Ravenala young plants.
