‘Stocks and Snaps’- Enthusiasm from national and international visitors for Evanthia’s open trials
Evanthia was delighted to welcome dozens of visitors to their Antirrhinum and Matthiola trials in the greenhouse of G van den Beukel in Monster in weeks 23, 24 and 25.
The trials showed a wide assortment of these crops, both focus products in Evanthia’s breeding programme. A number of experimental lines were shown next to the current commercial assortment, giving a glimpse into future developments in these leading cut flower crops. Sowing and transplanting of the Antirrhinum trials was carefully planned to ensure that practically all varieties, from group 1 to 4, could be grown to flower simultaneously. A unique achievement from grower Gerrit van den Beukel, supported by Evanthia’s product specialists!
This achievement certainly did not go unnoticed. In two weeks’ time, the team led more than 100 national and international visitors in tours through the trials. The highlight was the ‘growers day’ on June 12th, when no less than 40 Dutch growers and trade buyers came together to view, evaluate and discuss the varieties. There was much praise for the quality of the trials. One of the visiting growers described the uniformity of the Matthiola trial as ‘enviable’, especially considering that four different series were grown. Amongst them were the leading Milla series, and the breakthrough Japanese-type selectable series StoX®, in which a preview of new colours for the near future was shown. With StoX®, growers now have the opportunity to offer a year-round supply of Matthiola. Good news indeed for the buyers present!
In additional to the tried and trusted Antirrhinum assortment of Antibes I, Avignon I, Cannes II-III and Orleans III-IV, visitors were presented the newly introduced Toulon IV series. This series is specially developed to be above to achieve long, sturdy stems under warm conditions. Coupled with new developments in the cooler segment of the crop (another ‘sneak peek’), this forms a complete Antirrhinum offering from Evanthia that is unmatched in the market. The quality of the Antirrhinum trial also drew compliments. ‘Here, you see exactly what you need to see’ was one of the valued comments.
For anyone who missed the opportunity to see the trials live, Evanthia offers a solution. A professional video recording was made, available on request from Product Manager Peter van Noort: p.vnoort@evanthia.nl.
