Asparagus mazeppa
Special attention to this beautiful plant!
With lush, full plume-like stems, A. mazeppa is a feast for the eyes. This asparagus can be sold as a houseplant and as a garden plant. Thanks to its robust overhanging stems, A. mazeppa is ideal for use in large pots, hanging baskets and as vegetation in rock gardens and along the edges of raised border boxes. It has a powerful, fast growth habit and can be easily combined in cultivation with the many other Asparagus varieties in our range.
One big family
The Asparagus is a super versatile, herbaceous shrub with feathery or needle-like plumes, from (sub) tropical parts of southeastern Africa. Asparagus is regularly linked to ferns, but that is not true. Asparagus is a member of the Asparagaceae or Liliaceae family (depending on the classification system you use). Together with the edible Asparagus officinalis, ornamental asparagus belongs to the genus Asparagus, which includes over 300 other species. A huge and very diverse group.
Growing Asparagus gives you many options and convenience. It is a fast-growing and undemanding plant that easily adapts to a wide range of climatic conditions. They can withstand drought, cool temperatures and thrive in shady to bright light conditions (avoiding direct sunlight). You can grow them for use as elegant bouquet fillers with a long vase life, as houseplants and - several more robust varieties - even as garden plants. Go for a hanging or upright version and select cool or appropriate soft and fluffy items for your range. There is so much to choose from.
Like any large family, the Asparagus also has many peculiar and diverse characteristic types that can make a range interesting. To name a few:
The crazy aunt — A. pyramidalis, which forms foothills of fern-like plumes, with dense pyramid-like growth.
A super cute niece — A. meyerii with beautiful, seductively long foxtail plumes.
The funny nephew — A. plumosus nanus; a climber with frivolous, very fine, almost web-like branches. Great for dyeing in extravagant colors and used as an accent in flower arrangements.
An irritable uncle — A. falcatus with long sickle-shaped leaves and woody branches with thorns.
The outsider — A. medeoloids smilax with small, fresh green, oval-shaped leaves that are in a class of their own and look so different from all other Asparagus.
