Calathea rufibarba

Calathea rufibarba is a unique tropical foliage plant with a bushy, upright growth habit. This decorative standout is a bit of an outlier in our Calathea range. Unlike the other Calatheas in our series with broad oval leaves, C. rufibarba is recognized by its elongated, narrow leaves. These leaves have wavy margins and a very dark green color. The underside of the leaves is burgundy red and covered with fine hairs, making the plant remarkably soft to the touch. As a typical Calathea, rufibarba also earns the nickname 'living plant', because it closes or raises its leaves at night and unfurls or lowers them again in the morning. Calathea rufibarba is originally an evergreen perennial from tropical regions of South America, where it grows in the shaded, moist underlayers of rainforests. It is a lively and easy houseplant. Calathea rufibarba is also known as the Peacock Plant. Other internationally used names for Calathea rufibarba include: Goeppertia rufibarba; Furry feather Calathea; Velvet Calathea. Evanthia has Calathea rufibarba starting material available year-round, as young plants from tissue culture. Ask our team for the Calathea cultivation manual for commercial production.
