Calathea rufibarba
Calathea rufibarba is an extraordinary tropical foliage plant with a bushy, upright habit. This charmer is a bit of an oddity in our range of Calatheas. You can recognize C. rufibarba by its long and slender, ruffled dark green leaves. The undersides of the leaves are burgundy red and covered with fine hairs, making the plant particularly cuddly. As a typical Calathea, rufibarba too earns its nickname as ‘living plant’ because it closes or rises its leaves at night and uncurls or lowers them again in the morning. Calathea rufibarba is native to tropical areas of South America, where it grows as an evergreen perennial in the shady, damp understories of rainforests. It makes for a lively and easy houseplant. Calathea rufibarba is commonly known as Goeppertia rufibarba, Furry feather Calathea or Velvet Calathea, because of its significant leaf texture. Evanthia has Calathea rufibarba starting material available all year round, as tissue culture young plants. Ask our team for the Calathea cultivation manual for commercial production.
